Grouch

God never promised anyone that life was going to be easy. Trials are a part of the fabric of life, and without them the garment can’t hold up. Trials are like the rebar in those massive bridges that span great rivers. You can’t see them, but the structure hold up because of them.

Exodus 16:1-3

 They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

This was not the first or last time we find them grumbling because there is always something to grumble about. However, on close examination we always find God providing and leading.

So don’t be an old grouch. Just keep moving forward.

Think about it.

First Law of Motion

Everything continues in a state of rest unless it is compelled to change by forces impressed upon it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                 –  Issac Newton, First Law of Motion

As he journeyed to Damascus, Saul of Tarsus didn’t know much about Isaac Newton’s first law of motion. He didn’t know that the One he hated so was going to become his Lord and Savior. Change was in the air for the man who was to become Paul the Apostle as one born out of due time.

Acts 22:6-8
 “As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’

All of us who have come to know God were on some path leading to destruction. All of us had the wrong idea about God. Then suddenly, under some set of circumstances, He made Himself known and change became a reality.

What’s your story?

Think about it.

Livingstone

Dr. Livingstone, I presume? a famous greeting of Henry Morton Stanley upon locating David Livingstone in Africa. That’s about all that most of us know about him.

However, here is one of his quotes that exposes the heart of the man:

He is the greatest master I have ever known. If there’s anyone greater, I do not know him. Jesus Christ is the only master supremely worth serving. He’s the only ideal that never loses his inspiration. He’s the only friend whose friendship meets every demand. He’s the only savior who can save the uttermost. We go forth in his name, in his power, and his spirit to serve him.

Life for him wasn’t just about exploration in the harshest of environments but about the One who saved him from his sins.

Paul makes a statement about his different environments in spreading the gospel:

2 Corinthians 11:23-27

Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death.  Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.

Salvation is free, but it didn’t come to you without a cost.

Give it some thought.

What

General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, was asked the secret of his amazing Christian life. Booth answered, “I told the Lord that he could have all that there is of William Booth.”

The World’s Bible

by Annie Johnson Flint

Christ has no hands but our hands
To do His work today;
He has no feet but our feet
To lead men in His way;
He has no tongues but our tongues
To tell men how He died;
He has no help but our help
To bring them to His side.

We are the only Bible
The careless world will read;
We are the sinner’s Gospel,
We are the scoffer’s creed;
We are the Lord’s last message,
Given in deed and word;
What if the type is crooked?
What if the print is blurred?

The Apostle Paul’s conversion is recorded six times in Scripture. Here’s what he asked Jesus, and was obedient to the answer.

Acts 22:10

And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’

These people found in life a true purpose and lived accordingly. Here are some soul-searching questions.

  1. Are you blaming God for your state when you should be blaming yourself?
  2. Are you not dealing with your sin, but your sin is dealing with you?
  3. Would you rob God and spend it on self?

Just asking.

Give it some thought.

Soldier

Shortly after joining the Navy, the new recruit asked his officer for a pass so he could attend a wedding. The officer gave him the pass, but informed the young man that he would have to be back by 7 p.m. on Sunday.

“You don’t understand, sir,” said the recruit. “I’m in the wedding.”

“No, you don’t understand,” the officer shot back. “You’re in the Navy!”

I think sometimes we forget the fact that we are now soldiers of the cross. That involves missing out on some of life’s pleasures and being in some uncomfortable environments.

2 Timothy 2:3

Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 2:4

No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.

The place of service is on this planet somewhere and under a unique set of circumstances. Make your Commander proud.

Think about it.

Leftovers

Leftovers – some people like them and some people don’t. This I know, God and the governor don’t think much of them. If you tell the governor you’re going to pay your taxes with an old washer with a burnt pump, that will not go over well. They have an estimate of what belongs to them for services rendered.

Malachi 1:8

When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor?

God put us here and expects a return on His investment. How far did He go in His love towards us? He gave His only begotten Son. What exactly have we given back?

Pick the best of your flock and put down that old sick lamb.

Give it some thought.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral. There are six types, all of which are composed of long and thin fibrous crystals, each fiber being composed of many microscopic “fibrils” that can be released into the atmosphere by abrasion and other processes.

If you breathe asbestos fibers, you may increase the risk of several serious diseases, including asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Asbestos exposure may increase your risk for cancers of the digestive system, including colon cancer. Asbestos causes an estimated 255,000 deaths annually.

This dangerous material was considered a great invention and was found in buildings and vehicles all over the world. Then it was discovered that it was a silent killer.

Satan appeared in the garden of Eden and man thought he was an angel of light. He has been tormenting the world ever since. His advice only leads to death.

John 8:44

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Don’t believe his lies because the consequences can last for eternity.

Think about it.
