Gomer Pyle

Gomer Pyle aired on CBS from September 25, 1964, to May 2, 1969. Like his cousin Goober, Gomer provided comic relief.  He was often awestruck by the simplest of things, resulting in the exclamation of his catchphrases, “Shazam!”, “Golly”, “Sur-prise, sur-prise, sur-prise!”, and “shame, shame, shame!”

There are some people who just want to see the best in other people. They always find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. On the other hand, there are those who capitalize on the worst in others. Which one are you?

Ephesians 4:31-32

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Give it some thought.

Not Seen

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched — they must be felt with the heart. -Helen Keller

1 Timothy 1:5

The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

2 Thessalonians 3:5

May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Keep your heart in shape by fellowshipping with the right people and thinking about the right things.

Give it some thought.

Fingers

What did the man say to his fingers?  “I’m counting on you.”

That’s funny. However, life is full of individuals we count on every day. No one is an island.

Galatians 6:2

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Hebrews 6:10

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Don’t forget where you fit in and give it some thought.

The Next

Those of us born in this country are truly blessed.  The sacrifice of many in major wars have given us the quality of life we enjoy. Freedom of religion and expression are enjoyed, unlike many regions of our planet. Workers for the last two hundred years have built up an amazing standard of living. Our medical care is next to none. For the most part, our homes and streets are safe.

Yet, I am kind of thinking of what is next on my journey. The thought of spending more time here is not weighty, but I find myself considering the next world with anticipation. How about you?

Hebrews 11:16

“But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for He hath prepared for them a city.”

Think about it.

Good Old Days

I was born June 11,1952.  Google informs me that that was on a Wednesday. The first Chevrolet Corvette prototype was completed that year. I have a vague memory of that. LOL  The iconic musical film “Singin’ In the Rain” premiered at Radio City Music Hall. By the time I could see that movie, I didn’t want to. The average cost of a new car – $1,700.00. The cost of a gallon of gas was 20 cents.

Many long for the good old days, but the Bible says:

Ecclesiastes 7:10

Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.

The fact is, it is really all about today.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Think about it.

Your Gift

“What you are is God’s gift to you, what you become is your gift to God.”
Hans urs von Balthasar.

You are right, the Bible does have something to say about the way in which the believer is to conduct himself.

John 14:15

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Psalm 144:1

Of David. Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle;

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

You are now a citizen of heaven; act like one.

Give it some thought.

Snopes #2

One of my wife’s third graders was wearing a Fitbit watch, which prompted my wife to ask, “Are you tracking your steps?”

“No,” said the little girl. “I wear this for Mommy so she can show Daddy when he gets home.”

                                                                   —James Avery Readers Digest

Lying seems to be becoming a national pastime, not just for preachers and politicians anymore. You’re right, the Bible has a lot to say about it.

Proverbs 26:28

A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

1 Timothy 2:7

for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I like “Snopes” which is a well-regarded reference for sorting out myths and rumors on the Internet. The site has also been seen as a source for both validating and debunking urban legends and similar stories in American popular culture.

Give it some thought.
