The Archer

A saint’s life is in the hands of God as a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see; he stretches and strains, and every now and again the saint says, “I cannot stand anymore.” But God does not heed; he goes on stretching until his purpose is in sight, then he lets fly. We are here for God’s designs, not for our own.
    -Oswald Chambers (1874-1917)
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Proverbs 16:9
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
Proverbs 19:21
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
We are here because God placed us here, and we need to connect with His plan in this short life.
Give it some thought.

The Paradox of Our Age #5

The Paradox of Our Age #5

These are days of two incomes, but more divorce
Fancier houses, but broken homes

These are the days of quick trips,
Disposable diapers, cartridge living,
Throw-away morality, one-night stands, overweight bodies,
And pills that do everything from cheer, to prevent, quiet or kill

It is a time when there is much in the show window
And nothing in the stockroom

 A better way:

Psalm 18:30

This God—His way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Give it some consideration.

The Paradox of Our Age #4

The Paradox of Our Age #4

We write more, but learn less
We plan more, but accomplish less
We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait

We have higher incomes, but lower morals
We have more food, but less appeasement

A better way:

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Micah 6:8

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Give it some thought.

The Paradox of Our Age #3

The Paradox of Our Age #3

We’ve been all the way to the moon and back,
But have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor
We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space

We’ve done larger things, but not better things
We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul
We’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice

A better way:

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.

Isaiah 26:3-4

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

 Give it some consideration.

The Paradox of Our Age #2

The Paradox of Our Age #2

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly,
Laugh too little, drive too fast, get angry too quickly,
Stay up too late, get up too tired,
Read too seldom, watch TV too much,
And pray too seldom

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values
We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life
We’ve added years to life, not life to years

A better way:

Galatians 6:7

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Give it some thought.

The Paradox of Our Age #1

The Paradox of Our Age #1

We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers,

Wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints

We spend more, but we have less

We buy more, but enjoy it less.

We have bigger houses, but smaller families,

More conveniences, but less time,

We have more degrees, but less sense,

More knowledge, but less judgment

More experts, but more problems

More medicine, but less wellness.

God offers something better:

Galatians 5:1

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

John 8:32

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Think about it.

Pathfinder

The Pathfinders were target-marking squadrons in RAF Bomber Command during World War II. They located and marked targets with flares, at which a main bomber force could aim, increasing the accuracy of their bombing.

Identifying targets and accuracy are also two of the main functions of every Christian. What is your target and how accurate are you? These are two points of consideration every one of us should take seriously. Paul made it clear in his letter to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 9:26-27

Therefore, I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus, I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

Pick your target in the Christian experience and then hit it. We need to defeat the enemy of our souls.

Give it some thought.
